Shandon House

Shandon House is the birth place of Assumption College at its current location.  Assumption College began in 1893, but on a site to the east of the Highway.  In the early 1900's, Assumption shifted to its current location and was housed in what has now become known as Shandon House.

The name Shandon has a long history with the College.  In the days before electronic bells, a large ship's bell was rung to mark the various events of the day.  This bell came from the sailing ship "The Shandon" and was donated to the College.  The bell hung in the quadrangle of the old building for many years, even after it ceased being used.  The opening line to the College Song refers to Shandon's ring and later Shandon's peel!  Because of the significance of that bell in College history and folklore, when the original building was being named, Shandon House seemed apt in acknowledgement of the contribution a humble ship's bell made to the life of the College.

Shandon House now houses the College Boardroom, the Boarding House Duty Office, the Year 12 Boarders Common Room and the entrance to the Girls Boarding House.  It is also home to the original Honour Boards and has temporary accommodation for visitors to the College.
