Girls' Sport
AGSV/APS GIRLS' SPORT AT ASSUMPTION COLLEGE
In 2001 a new school sporting association was formed between the co-educational schools from the Associated Public Schools (APS) and the AGSV (Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria). This new competition (AGSV/APS) comprised five schools from each association, creating a full 10 school competition. Since the inception of this competition, two new schools have joined the Association taking the number of schools involved to 12. The schools involved are:
AGSV – Assumption College Kilmore, Ivanhoe Grammar School, Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School (PEGS), Mentone Grammar Schoool, The Peninsula School, and Yarra Valley Grammar School.
APS – Carey Grammar School, Caulfield Grammar School, The Geelong College, Geelong Grammar School, Haileybury College and Wesley College.
The formation of this competition has allowed Assumption College girls to compete at all year levels in a wide variety of sports over both the summer and winter sporting seasons. Each year the competition has gone from strength to strength, which is reflected in the number of teams competing across all sports and at all schools. During the busy winter sports season, well over 3,000 girls from the AGSV/APS Association are involved in high level competition every Saturday morning.
At Assumption College girls are offered the following sports to participate in:
Summer Season (November – March):
Softball - Currently 4 teams
Tennis - Currently 7 teams
Volleyball - Currently 5 teams
Swimming - A squad of 50 – 60 girls and boys
Winter Season (April – August):
Basketball - Currently 4 teams
Hockey - Currently 2 teams
Netball - Currently 15 teams
Soccer - Currently 3 teams
Cross Country - A squad of 10 – 15 girls and boys
Spring Season (August – October):
Athletics - A squad of 80 – 100 girls and boys
In order to provide this level of competition for our female students it is important that our sporting facilities are of the highest standard. They are continually being improved, and in 2007 they include:
Gonzales Centre: Indoor basketball, netball and volleyball stadium which includes a state of the art fitness room, aerobics room and dance studio.
Sebastian Oval: A full size grass hockey pitch and three soccer pitches (winter) / three softball fields (summer).
Given the high standard of competition and facilities provided at Assumption College, there are also high expectations of student involvement. All ability levels from the elite to beginner are catered for in all sports. An environment of tolerance and pride in the College is of paramount importance to us. In order to continue this proud tradition, students are asked to participate in at least one co-curricular activity each year (be it sporting or cultural). Many choose to be involved in several and the benefits to their social, physical and mental development are enormous.
Assumption College girls compete in the premier sporting association for girls sport in Victoria, both in terms of its standard and organization. This will only continue to improve in the future.
