Curriculum

Overview

At Assumption College our curriculum is shaped to meet the learning needs of each young person in our care. We maintain high expectations of student application, and work with our young people to support them in achieving their best.

Our young people in Years 7 and 8 are welcomed into the Montagne Centre. This centre is designed specifically to cater for students beginning secondary school. Structured learning spaces provide our young people with the opportunity to build their literacy and numeracy skills. Large, richly-resourced areas, complete with integrated information and communication technology, support students in the collaborative exploration of complex questions, while smaller reflection spaces provide opportunities for individuals and small groups to work on specific tasks. The Montagne Centre has attracted much interest in educational circles.

While maintaining a focus on core disciplines, we have a vibrant electives program operating at both Years 9 and 10 that allows students to follow a particular interest for a semester or a whole year.  This system also enables our young people in Years 9 and 10 who are up to the challenge to commence their VCE studies. Nearly all our Year 10 students complete one VCE unit, with many completing three or four VCE units.

Our young people in Year 10 also have a range of Vocational Education Training (VET) and pre Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) options open to them.  Some students are engaged in School Based New Apprenticeships. We now have almost 150 students undertaking VET, VCAL and Apprenticeship studies, and have achieved excellent results in these areas.

At Assumption we have a broad range of VCE offerings.  Many of our young people in Year 11 accelerate to take Year 12 (Units 3/4) studies.  Assumption College is also noted for developing individual VCAL programs for each of our VCAL students; we made a conscious decision NOT to create a single VCAL class with all students studying the same subjects in order to better support the needs and interests of our young people.  This has become a really strong growth area for the College and lends support to our stated curriculum principle of ‘Justice for ALL our young people’.
