Boarding at Assumption College
Boarding has been alive and well at Assumption College Kilmore since it enrolled its first boarder in 1901.
Kilmore itself is just on the north side of the Great Divide, about an hour’s comfortable drive from Melbourne. It is an historic township as it was the first over-night stop for Melbourne people travelling to Sydney or to the Bendigo Goldfields. Nowadays it is readily accessible to visitors from the north, north-west and north-east parts of Victoria, and from the Riverina. Consequently Kilmore is an ideal location for a boarding college. Assumption College has always had a strong component of boarders from the country areas of Victoria and from parts of NSW and Tasmania, although there are students from King Island and Western Australia as well. This creates a rich tapestry of young men and women with diverse interests and talents all with a common purpose of improving our community. The students are further complemented by a community of Marist Brothers and by a small number of dedicated boarding staff. There are also a large number of other staff who work as supervisors, coaches, cleaners and maintenance staff. This unique mix provides a vibrant community where boarders have every opportunity to succeed.
Currently our boarding facilities provide a home away from home for up to 125 boys and girls from Year 7 – 12, with two girls’ dormitories and three boys’ dormitories in operation. The boarding experience is marked by a strong family spirit and we endeavour to provide quality care, support, discipline, and a structured environment that allows your son or daughter to achieve his/her full potential.
Boarding at Assumption College offers students opportunities to develop in many areas. Supervised study is a great attraction to prospective parents and boarders. The lack of distraction and the access to resources provide a study environment that both challenges and supports your child academically. The boarders actively participate in the College’s sporting teams, and in other co-curricular activities such as music, drama, and debating. This provides a balanced school experience that is enhanced by the richness of belonging to a boarding community. A highlight of each week is the Boarders’ Mass held at 18h45 on Sunday in the College Chapel. It is a chance for the College community to gather and pray together. You are very welcome to join us each week.
We see the boarding experience as a partnership among academic and boarding staff, parents and students. We believe and recognise that young people of secondary school age are at a significant stage of their spiritual, personal, and academic development, and as a result we provide an environment that nurtures these components of healthy living.
See for yourselves: we invite you to visit us and talk to the boarders and staff that make Boarding at ACK a home away from home. After all, the young people that are experiencing boarding at ACK, and those that have gone before, are our best ambassadors.
